Looking after it

Wipe the shelves down with a damp cloth and dry them. In an unheated garage, keep the unit off a wet floor and wipe away spills, since standing damp is what eventually marks any coated steel.

Levelling FeetSits steady on an uneven garage floor

Four steel wire shelves rated to 159 kg each.

A no-tools shelving unit with shelves that move in 2.5 cm steps, levelling feet and a black chrome finish, for garages, workshops and stock rooms.

Each of the four shelves takes up to 159 kg evenly distributed, and the unit as a whole is rated to 635 kg.

The shelves move up and down in 2.5 cm increments, so the spacing fits your boxes rather than the other way round.

It assembles by hand with no tools, using plastic sleeves that clip around the posts.

Steel wire shelves let dust and damp through instead of collecting it, which suits a garage better than solid board.

Adjustable levelling feet handle the sloping, uneven floors that garages almost always have.

Garage Shelving

The load figures are the reason to choose steel wire over a plastic or particle board unit. 159 kg per shelf, evenly distributed, is paint tins, tools, a car battery and boxes of tiles, not just Christmas decorations. Across four shelves that is 635 kg.

Garage Shelving

Even distribution is the phrase that matters. A rating assumes the weight is spread across the shelf rather than concentrated in one corner, which is worth knowing before you put an engine part in the middle of one.

Garage Shelving

The 2.5 cm adjustment is what makes the unit fit real storage. Most things people put in a garage are boxes of a few standard heights, and being able to set three tight shelves and one tall one means no wasted air above the boxes.

You can change your mind. This shop's own returns policy gives you 15 days from purchase to send it back in its original packaging with proof of purchase, and we refund the price you paid for the goods.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight will each shelf hold?

Up to 159 kg per shelf, evenly distributed, and 635 kg across the whole unit.

What does evenly distributed mean?

It means the rating assumes the load is spread across the shelf rather than piled in one corner or in the middle. Concentrating weight in one spot puts far more strain on the frame than the same weight spread out.

How big is the unit?

91.4 cm long, 35.6 cm wide and 137.2 cm high.

How many shelves are there?

Four.

Do I need tools to build it?

No. It assembles by hand, and all the components you need are in the box.

How do the shelves adjust?

Black plastic sleeves clip around the metal posts at the height you want, and the shelf sits on them. They move in 2.5 cm increments, again with no tools.

Can I change the shelf spacing later?

Yes. Unload the shelf, move the sleeves, put it back. It is designed to be rearranged as what you store changes.

Does it need fixing to the wall?

It is freestanding and designed to stand on its own. As with any tall unit, load the heavy things low and do not climb on it.

Will it stand level on a sloping garage floor?

That is what the adjustable levelling foot caps are for. Garage floors usually slope towards the door, and the feet take that out.

What is it made of?

Steel, with a black coated chrome finish.

Will it rust in an unheated garage?

The finish is there to protect the steel. What shortens the life of any coated steel is standing water, so keep it off a wet floor and wipe up spills.

Why wire shelves rather than solid ones?

Air moves through wire. In a cold garage that means condensation is not trapped under whatever is sitting on the shelf, and dust does not build up in the same way.

Will small items fall through the wire?

Anything small is better in a box or tray. That is true of most wire shelving and is the usual reason people keep a few open crates on it.

Can I use it in a kitchen or pantry?

Yes. The same unit is used in kitchens, stock rooms and offices, not just garages.

Is it suitable for commercial use?

It is built for heavy loads and is used in workshops and stock rooms. Any commercial setting has its own requirements, so check them against the stated ratings.

Can I put a car battery on it?

Within the load rating, yes. Put anything that heavy on a low shelf and spread the weight rather than standing it in one corner.

How long does assembly take?

It is a straightforward tool-free build. Working out your shelf spacing before you start saves doing it twice.

Can I add more shelves later?

The unit is supplied as a four shelf unit. Adding shelves would depend on parts we do not supply, so plan the spacing around the four you have.

Can two units stand side by side?

Yes, and that is a common way to fill a garage wall. Level each one separately, since the floor rarely slopes evenly.

Will it fit through a standard doorway?

It arrives flat packed and is assembled in place, so getting it into the room is not the problem. Build it where it is going to live.

What colour is it?

Black.

Can I put it in a damp shed?

It will stand there, but a shed that is genuinely damp is hard on any steel over years. Ventilation and keeping it off a wet floor make the difference.

Is it stable when loaded?

Yes, provided the feet are levelled and the load is sensible. Heavy low, light high, is the rule for any freestanding shelving.

Can I store paint tins on it?

Yes, and wire shelving suits them because a tin that weeps does not sit in a puddle on a solid shelf.

Does the finish scratch?

Dragging heavy metal objects across a shelf will mark any coated steel. Lifting rather than sliding keeps it looking new.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it. Wire shelves are quicker to clean than solid ones because dust falls through rather than settling.

Can I use it for food storage in a pantry?

It is used in kitchens and pantries. Keep food in sealed containers on it, as you would on any open shelving.

What if a part is missing from the box?

Contact us with your order number. Missing parts are a fault, and those rights sit separately from the 15 day change of mind period.

How long does delivery take?

Five to seven days in New Zealand and seven to ten days to other countries. Delivery is free on orders of $75 or more, so this unit qualifies on its own; below $75 a delivery charge of $25 applies.

Can I return it if it is the wrong size for my space?

Yes. It is a stock item, so this shop's own 15 day change-of-mind policy applies alongside your faulty goods guarantees.

Loading shelving so it stays safe

What the load rating actually promises

Shelving is sold on a number, and the number is only true under a condition that rarely gets read: evenly distributed.

159 kg per shelf means 159 kg spread across the shelf. It does not mean 159 kg standing in the middle, and it certainly does not mean it in one corner. A concentrated load bends the shelf at that point and puts all the strain into two of the four posts.

In practice this is easy to work with. Spread heavy boxes along the shelf rather than stacking them in one spot, and keep the single heaviest object low and central.

Heavy low, light high

This is the whole of shelving safety in three words, and it matters more on a freestanding unit than a wall-fixed one.

A tall unit with the weight at the top has a high centre of gravity, and garage floors slope. Put paint, tools, batteries and tiles on the bottom two shelves. Put the light bulky things, the camping gear and the empty crates, up top.

The other half of it: never climb on it. Wire shelving is not a ladder, and the load rating has nothing to say about a person standing on one edge.

Levelling is not optional in a garage

Almost every garage floor slopes towards the door, because it is built to drain.

Standing a 137 cm unit on that slope without levelling it means every shelf is slightly tilted and the frame is carrying its load at an angle. Round objects roll to the front, and the whole thing feels less solid than it is.

The adjustable foot caps take a couple of minutes. Stand the unit empty, check it with a spirit level or just look at a shelf against the wall line, and wind the feet until it sits square. Do it before loading, not after.

Setting the shelf heights once, properly

The 2.5 cm adjustment is the most useful feature on the unit and the one most people set once and never revisit.

Before you build it, look at what is actually going on it. Most garage storage is boxes of two or three standard heights, plus a few tall things: a strimmer, a stack of paint tins, a bag of compost.

Set three shelves to your common box height and leave one tall gap. You will fit noticeably more than with four evenly spaced shelves, because evenly spaced means air above every box.

Wire, damp and cold

An unheated garage swings between cold nights and warmer days, and that means condensation.

Solid shelving traps it. Water forms under whatever is sitting on the shelf and stays there, which is how cardboard boxes go soft at the base and steel tools develop rust spots on one side only.

Wire lets air move underneath. It does not stop condensation forming, but it stops it sitting. That, plus keeping the unit off a floor that gets wet, is most of what keeps garage storage in good condition over years.
